I gave Carlotta Grandstaff my last quarter
Three departments this morning made requests to raise, lower or implement new fees. Requests submitted by the public nurse and GIS were approved. Those by the sheriff were placed on hold.
Why? Commissioners wanted more information about them, and no one from the department was present or available by phone.
The sheriff wanted a new $25 for booking and a $100 fee for Mitts.
Mitts?
Commissioner Carlotta Grandstaff called for an explanation. We waited.
“Mobile Inmate Transfer Transactions,” said Ken Miller, head of GIS.
Like Miller, I supposed Mitts was an acronym.
Commissioner Jim Rokosch thought it was just a word that meant something else.
“OK, let’s go then,” said Commissioner J.R. Iman, pulling out a quarter.
“You’re on,” said Miller.
Rokosch’s answer was “temporary hold.”
Miller stuck with his.
Grandstaff said, “I remember that from my reporting days.”
She said it was shorthand for mittimus, a warrant issued for someone in custody.
Ridiculous, I thought. Of course it’s an acronym.
My idea was “Montana Integrated Technology Transport Service.”
I put my quarter on the table.
No luck, we found out a moment later. Mittimus it was.
